Indira Jaising
Indira Jaising is an eminent lawyer with a career spanning over 40 yrs in social action litigation in India. She has successfully argued several cases resulting in path-breaking judgements in the area of environmental law, sexual harassment and rights of women relating to inheritance and guardianship within the personal law regime. She has spearheaded the campaign for a civil law on Domestic Violence in India which lead to its enactment in October, 2006. Ms. Jaising is the founder secretary, The Lawyers Collective, an organisation of Lawyers and law students, involved in servicing the unfulfilled needs of the victims of undeserved want. She is currently the Director of the Lawyers Collective Women's Rights Initiative, which focuses on the elimination of violence against women. She has also actively lobbied to get the Domestic Violence Bill passed. As the Founder-Editor of The Lawyers, a monthly journal, published by Law Cooperative she has attempted to spread awareness of legal rights among women, children and the working classes.
