  • What We Do

    Advocacy

    The Unit's Advocacy team complements its Legal Services. It is through the Unit's Advocacy efforts that links with a wide spectrum of PLHA networks, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Governmental agencies and other stakeholders are made in order to promote the rights-based approach to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The Research initiative attempts to track legal developments on HIV/AIDS and public health in India and internationally, and critique the same through position papers, policy analysis and reports.Read more

  • Structure

    Advocacy of the Unit involves the creating of awareness about the legal, ethical and human rights issues surrounding HIV/AIDS and creating an appropriate legal environment by way of policy and law. It also involves highlighting the vulnerabilities of the marginalized populations such as the Sex Workers, Men having Sex with Men (MSM), Injecting Drug Users (IDUs), Women etc to HIV and addressing these vulnerabilities.Read more

  • Workshops and Seminars

    The Unit has developed capacity building materials on the legal, ethical and human rights issues arising out of HIV/AIDS and marginalisation of vulnerable populations in India. There has been a continuing approach to inform and develop capacity of PLHAs and vulnerable populations about their legal rights as they relate to HIV/AIDS and marginalisation.Read more

  • Campaigns and Networks

    The Unit has been involved in launching and participating in 3 key campaigns related to HIV/AIDS these include 'Right to Marry Campaign' to raise public opinion and awareness on the judgment of the Supreme Court of India suspending the right of PLHAs to marry and as result of the campaign the matter was taken up in the Supreme Court to reverse the suspension of marriage of PLHAsRead more

  • Other Activities

    The Unit and its staff have been part of several important initiatives at the national and international levels and have attempted to influence public opinion on HIV/AIDS at various levels. Some of these include:
    National Conference on Human Rights and HIV/AIDS - New Delhi, November 2000. This conference was organised by the Unit jointly with the National Humans Rights Commission, NACO, UNAIDS and UNICEF.Read more
