On 13th September, 2017, eminent constitutional law expert and Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court PP Rao passed away following a cardiac arrest, after dedicating over 5 decades to the profession. It has been a great loss to the legal fraternity.
He had been part of several landmark judgments including the Kesavananda Bharti v Union of India, A.R. Antulay v. R.S. Naik, S.R. Bommai v. Union of India, P.V. Narasimha Rao v State, Ashok Kumar Thakur v. Union of India among others. He also assisted Attorney-General Nirin De in the ADM Jabalpur case.
After completing his LL.B. and LL.M. from Law College of Osmania University at Hyderabad, PP Rao worked a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Delhi University. It was during his stint at Delhi University when he came in contact with Senior Advocate N.C.Chatterjee who persuaded him to join the Bar in 1967. He was designated Senior Advocate in 1976, and elected President of the Supreme Court Bar Association in 1991. In addition to these numerous accolades, he was bestowed with the Padma Bhushan in 2006.
He was a true believer of the legal profession being a service oriented job, and critical of those who compromised professional ethics for money-making.
