LAWYERS COLLECTIVE WOMEN'S RIGHTS INITIATIVE

The Lawyers Collective (Women’s Rights Initiative) is a group of lawyers, law students and activists committed to the use of law as an effective instrument for empowering and changing the status of women in India. The objective of the Collective has been to evaluate the efficacy of laws, recommend its proper implementation and to spearhead law reform processes in response to the need of the times.

 

LEGAL OFFICER

The Collective invites applications for the position of Legal Officer for their Legal Aid Cell in Delhi.

Job Profile 

Main Responsibilities

The Applicant will be expected to conduct the following activities:

  1. Attend court in relation to the litigation pursued by the Legal Aid Cell.
  2. Provide legal counselling to those approaching the Legal Aid Cell for support.
  3. Liaise with state functionaries and other service providers to assist women facing domestic violence/other forms of discrimination.
  4. Prepare reports of the cases handled by the Legal Aid Cell.
  5. Provide legal trainings and prepare training materials for partner organisations and other stakeholders.
  6. Plan and participate in the conduct of alternate dispute resolution mechanisms provided in law.
  7. Interact with a network of law enforcement authorities, government officials, service providers, activists in the women's movement etc.
  8. Prepare, in a timely manner, materials for both internal and external use including reports, action materials, submissions to be made in different forums.
  9. Represent the Collective in national and international forums as and when appropriate.
  10. To be involved with coordinating 'Survivor Group' (a group of survivors of domestic violence) meetings
  11. To attend the Crime Against Women Cell on a weekly basis and provide legal advice.

Person Specification

Applicants must hold the following qualifications:

  1. A degree in law.
  2. Prior litigation experience in Family law and matrimonial issues.
  3. Must be fluent in spoken and written Hindi and English.
  4. Proven writing/ drafting, communication and analytical skills.
  5. A good understanding of women's issues and a commitment to women's rights.
  6. Ability to organise, plan and prioritise work
  7. Ability to work individually as well as part of a team.
  8. Skills in computer applications and data entry.
  9. Preference shall be given to women applicants and those belonging to minorities

Terms and conditions

The successful applicants will be based in Delhi. The post is offered for a 1-year renewable contract.  Salaries shall be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

LEGAL OFFICER : TOBACCO CONTROL 

Job Profile 

Main Responsibilities

The Applicant will be expected to conduct the following activities:

1. Draft public interest litigation and special leave petition relating to tobacco issues.

2. Attend court proceeding all over the country in relation to the litigation pursued by the LCWRI’s tobacco team.

3. Liaise with state functionaries, non-governmental organization in raising legal awareness abouttobacco control    policies.

4. Provide legal trainings and prepare training materials for partner organisations and otherstakeholders in relation to    tobacco control laws.

5. Represent LCWRI at national and international forums as and when appropriate.


Person Specification

 The Applicant must hold the following qualifications:

1.  A degree in law.

2. An interest in and a good understanding of tobacco related issues, knowledge  of and   prior work experience in  tobacco    control  work,  for example, harmful effects of tobacco  consumption, knowledge of COTPA (Cigarettes  And Other  Tobacco    Products (Prohibition Of  Advertisement And  Regulation Of Trade And  Commerce,  Production, Supply And  Distribution)    ACT, 2003) ,  compensation claims for injury  caused by tobacco  etc, is a  must. 

3.  Good drafting skills. Prior experience in drafting petitions under Article 32 and 226 is highly  desirable.

4.  Litigation experience is a must.

5.  Experience in public health issues is desirable. 

6.  Proven analytical and research skills.

7.  Must be fluent in spoken and written English.

8.  Ability to organise, plan and prioritise work

9.  Ability to work individually as well as part of a team.

LAWYERS COLLECTIVE HIV/AIDS Unit

The Lawyers Collective HIV/AIDS Unit is committed to protect and promote the rights of people affected by HIV/AIDS, through law reform, legal aid and allied services of advocacy, training and research. Moreover, on the rights based approach on human rights. The activities aim not only to protect the rights of those affected by HIV/AIDS but also those most vulnerable to HIV/AIDS including sex workers, injecting drug users, gay and transgender communities due to the non-recognisation of their rights. The activities include provision of legal services, advocacy and policy research. LAWYERS Collective HIV/AIDS Unit - is seeking personnel for the following post in their Offices.

Criteria required for LEGAL OFFICER

Law graduate, in-depth knowledge of legal, medical, ethical and social issues arising out of the HIV/ AIDS epidemic in India . Sensitivity to the broad range of issues arising out of the HIV/AIDS epidemic- 2 years work experience in legal practice in the courts on public interest issues / HIV/AIDS. Experience should indicate competency in project management and the NGO sector in India - Computer literacy essential – Fluency in English and any local language is a must.

Criteria required for ADVOCACY OFFICER

An LL.B degree,– Knowledge & sensitivity to broad range of issues arising out of the HIV/ AIDS epidemic in India with particular emphasis on the legal & ethical issues. Good communication & facilitation skills – Experience of working with NGOs on public interest issues – Willing to do field work with affected communities – Comprehensive computer literacy essential. Fluency & communication skills in English and any local language is a must.
