The Colloquium on Domestic Violence 1999: An excerpt
The campaign for mainstreaming the issue of domestic violence was in effect started with the Colloquium on "Empowerment through Law" organized by LCWRI on May 8-9 1999. The aim of the colloquium was to have the judiciary recognize that domestic violence exists and has to be prevented through law. The Chief Justice of India inaugurated the event, with judges of the Supreme Court and high court.
The colloquium provided an interface for the judiciary and civil society to discuss their concerns on the issue of domestic violence.
For the published Report of the Colloquium "Domestic Violence and the Law: Empowerment through Law" (includes the papers presented) contact Butterworths Publishers, New Delhi.
It was following this Colloquium where the draft law was discussed in detail, along with a proactive collaboration with other partner organizations and government bodies that led to the formulation of the Final Lawyers Collective Women's Rights Initiative Draft Bill in 2004.
